Powis Castle and Garden sits just outside Welshpool in Mid Wales, and it’s a lovely spot for a family day out. It has that nice mix of history, gardens, open views, winding paths, and little corners for children to explore without the whole visit feeling too stiff or grown-up.
We’ve visited with the kids for both Easter and Halloween trails, and they’re a good way to give the day a bit of structure. Powis Castle often runs family trails and seasonal events around holidays and school breaks, so it’s worth checking what’s on before you go. Having something to follow makes the gardens feel more like an adventure for children, instead of just a walk around old walls and historic grounds because the grown-ups said so.
The castle itself began as a medieval Welsh stronghold, but over time became the grand historic home you can visit today. Inside, there are furnished rooms, artwork, textiles, and collections from different parts of the world, which add a bit of depth and atmosphere to the visit. With children, though, the gardens may be the easier part to enjoy.
For us, the outside spaces were the highlight. The castle rising above the terraces gives everything a bit of a storybook feeling, especially when you slow down and look back up towards the building. There’s enough history and atmosphere for adults, enough space and variety for children, and a café if you want to make more of a day of it.
